A Q&A with Michael Heintz, Enotec Imports
At TWP Distribution, we are proud to partner with importers who share our commitment to quality, authenticity, and thoughtfully curated wines. One of those partners is Enotec Imports, Inc..
We sat down with Michael Heintz, President and CEO of Enotec Imports, to learn more about what makes Italian wines so distinctive and what he is excited about right now.
From hidden regional gems to everyday bottles that consistently overdeliver, Michael shares his perspective on the craftsmanship, history, and value behind Italian wine.
Q: What makes Italian wines so unique compared to other regions around the world?
A: Italy’s rich landscape provides an ideal backdrop for wine and its many regions. The Apennine Mountains, formed by tectonic plate collisions that uplifted marine limestone soils, run the entire length of the Italian peninsula and create unique wine-growing conditions. Their elevation potential, combined with Italy’s predominantly Mediterranean climate, further enhances wine production and quality.
Additionally, Italy’s long history of conquest by various civilizations introduced diverse cultures and grape varieties. This has contributed to Italy having more native grape types than any other country. The country’s length, ancient history, and historically isolated communities led to distinct culinary and winemaking traditions, resulting in the diversity of wines we enjoy today.
It is also worth noting that even in today’s market, including tariffs, you do not have to spend heavily to enjoy a high-quality, food-friendly Italian wine. That is something everyone can appreciate.
Q: How do you decide which wineries to partner with and bring into your portfolio?
A: We focus on real wines, made by real people, from real places. A key part of that is working with producers who have multigenerational ties to their land and compelling stories that can be shared. We also prioritize wines that are true to their region and made in a mostly traditional style.
From there, we evaluate the business side. We look at how the wines are priced within their category, how they fit into the competitive landscape, whether there is an existing market or an opportunity to create one, and whether the packaging performs well. When all of those factors align, we move forward.
Q: Are there any lesser-known Italian regions or varietals you think deserve more attention right now?
A: There are many hidden gems. I am always a fan of Barolo from Italy’s northwest corner, particularly from Roberto Sarotto. As the weather warms here in Michigan, I tend to gravitate toward crisp and vibrant Italian white wines such as Pecorino from Abruzzo and Carricante from Sicily. We will be launching a few examples of these soon.
Q: What is one wine in your portfolio that overdelivers for the price, and why?
A: We recently launched a crisp Prosecco called Naonis, pronounced Now Knees. It is a Brut style with less than half the sugar of many mainstream Proseccos. It features aromas and flavors of Asian pear, quince, Granny Smith apple, white flowers, and a hint of spice.
It works well both with food and on its own. At around fifteen dollars retail, it consistently outperforms many larger brands.
Q: When you are personally opening a bottle at home, what are you reaching for right now?
A: In addition to the vibrant whites I mentioned, I am also reaching for lighter-bodied reds that can be served slightly chilled, such as Kaltern’s Schiava. This grape is indigenous to the northern province of Alto Adige, near the Austrian border.
At around twenty dollars, it offers bright strawberry and herbal notes and pairs well with antipasti such as cured meats, cheeses, olives, nuts, and fresh bread. It is a great option for casual gatherings and warm weather occasions.
